Taake Ngakau is a collection of projects which aim to reduce inequalities through actions that empower and upskill individuals, whānau, hapu and communities, and promote health and wellbeing of whānau/communities in the Kaikohe district. Te Hau Ora O Ngāpuhi window design Re-design of the Te Hau Ora O Ngāpuhi windows with local rangatahi and whānau. We have commissioned ĀKAU, a design and architecture organisation, to re-design our front windows, both at our offices in Kaikohe and our soon to be opened whānau space a couple of doors down. ĀKAU were chosen for this project because they have a vision to create thriving communities around Aotearoa where every young person has a purpose, a voice, and meaningful participation. They believe in opportunities for rangatahi to be involved in the design of real projects in their community, giving them the opportunity to think creatively and innovatively about how they want their communities to be and empowering them to make real positive social change themselves. ĀKAU will work with local rangatahi and whānau in Kaikohe to develop a design that tells their story for the window of the whānau space, empower users of the whānau space to make it feel like their own, and show the community the positive stories happening in Kaikohe. The concepts and graphical style that emerge from these interactions will then be used by ĀKAU to develop new designs for the windows. The project kicked off on Monday 11th of July through a workshop where over 20 youth and whānau came together to tell their whakapapa, and produce moving designs around health and well-being.
